"In the 1960s, far from civilisation and regular roads, stripped down desert bikes based on Triumph twins and fitted with high level exhausts, dirt bike tyres and suspension were being used for hard recreational fun and competition on tough terrain. The Scrambler takes its inspiration from these very bikes. They were highly competitive and most famously were used by Hollywood superstar Steve McQueen for pleasure and in full competition. Including the 1964 International Six Day Trial (ISDT) in East Germany. We built the Scrambler to evoke that spirit of freedom and escape, carefree times when all you needed was a bike and somewhere to ride." —Triumph Motorcycles, sales blurb, 2015 |
The 865cc Triumph Scrambler gets better every year, not in huge leaps, but in steady increments. Triumph knows it's onto a winner and is no doubt burning this fuse very slowly to delay the moment when the whole thing goes bang and falls from fashion. So what's different for 2014? Black is different. Black rims. Black oil lines. And black hubs. Also, a new seat (complete with a logo on the rear) adds a touch of old Triumph. As with the rest of the range, Triumph has redesigned the cylinder head and barrel, and the change is a real improvement, visually speaking. Performance, however, is unchanged. Those pipes and silencers are still obtrusive. The tyres are still not ideal for asphalt. And the suspension and braking is still never more than adequate. But for the kind of use these future-classic scramblers are likely to get, you're not likely to be faced with too many unwanted surprises on the road. Colours are Matt Pacific Blue, or Lunar Silver/Diablo Red.
