1938 Matchless Model X - Cheffins

This old 990cc workhorse, we hear, hasn't seen much usage over the years, but the current mileage isn't given. However, it's the old story of some regular use at the outset followed by a long period of storage, then a rebuild, then some more storage, and finally a sale.

Cheffins will be auctioning this bike, Lot 492, at its Bristol Sale on Saturday 30th November 2013 at the Bristol Sales Centre, Easter Compton, Bristol, BS35 5RE.

A Watsonian sidecar chassis was attached just a year ago, and a ply body was fitted. A buff log book is part of the deal, along with a V5C and an original instruction book.

The estimate is £18,000 - £22,000, which we think is low for a Model X. Classic pre-war V-twins are in demand, and the Model X has exactly the right looks and poise and pull. We're not sure that the chair makes a huge difference to the price, but it's bolted to the bike, so you might as well get it while it's going.

There's some intrigue about the crankcases that's worth mentioning. The originals are not fitted, but they are available from another party. You'll have to talk to Cheffins for more on this.
