7th April 2019, Sunday

London Bus Museum Spring Gathering

Brooklands Museum, Brooklands Road, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0QN.

Buses are, naturally enough, the main event at this event. But there will also be an unspecified number of taxi-cabs, trucks and military vehicles on display. The organisers reckon it's the longest-running and best-loved show of its kind, and we're not arguing. Around 100 buses and coaches from all over the UK will be converging at Brooklands. Expect new and old stuff. The theme this year is "Pay As You Board", and there will be all kinds of exhibitions of bus equipment, memorabilia and suchlike. We know that plenty of you Sumpsters are interested in this kind of stuff (and here at Sump we confess a passing interest too). So if you're in the area, or fancy a trip, get your motor running. There's also stuff for the kiddies including a treasure hunt, so you can make a family day of it, etc. And one more thing; there will be a "traditional Punch & Judy Show". But in this age of political correctness, how traditional will that really be? Meanwhile, all the usual Brooklands attractions (motorcycles, cars and aircraft) will be accessible.

Bowood Spring Classic Car & Motorcycle Show

Prescott Hill Climb, Gotherington, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL52 9RD.
The National Custom Bike Show was launched in 2010. This year it will be held at the annual Prescott Bike Festival. The event will also be hosting the 2019 National Championships for custom bike building. There are five classes. Best Freestyle; Best Young Builder; Best Butchered (Modified) Classic; Best Budget Build; Best (Modified) Performance Sportsbike; Plus one separate award for Best in Show. Judging will be held on the (preview) Saturday. Awards will happen on Sunday. A selected judging panel (custom magazine editors and suchlike) will make the trophy decisions. The event will be held inside a huge marquee. We're advised that the Prescott Bike Festival is the biggest annual fundraiser for Blood Bikes. Keep that in mind, if you will. As for the Prescott Hill Climb itself, you can figure out what that's all about. So expect plenty of noise, smells, thrills and so on. There will also be a Show ‘n’ Tell, hot and cold food and drinks, "live hot rockin’ bands", a large exhibitor zone (with over 100 trade exhibitors expected), a Kid's Zone and more.

Expect around 100 autojumble pitches, and there will be camping pitches too. We'd like to tell you how many miles the riding course will be this year, but that info isn't immediately obvious on the website. So if it's important, contact the organiser. We are told, however, that riders will start at 5 per minute. Meanwhile, there will be discounted entry fees for veteran machines on the run, and the museum will be free to both entrants and spectators.

St Ives Festival of Motorcycles 2019

Johnsons of Old Hurst, Church St, Huntingdon, PE28 3AF.

Firstly, we have to point out that this gathering isn't actually in St Ives—and that's St Ives, Cambridgeshire and not St Ives, Cornwall. Instead, having been saddled with unwelcome (but unspecified) restrictions, the organisers moved a little further down the road to a more permanent site. But if you aim for St Ives (Cambs), you'll be in the right area. The Hunts Bikers established this show. It's open to all and promises "bikes, clubs, traders, music and more". Funds raised from the festival have, in the past, gone towards the MAGPAS Air Ambulance and the Royal British Legion.

The Brooklands Motorcycle Show

Brooklands Road, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0QN
Historic bikes, the 1909 Test Hill challenge, refreshments, and the remains of the old Brooklands track to explore. Expect the see and hear some pretty rare beasts and bump into some pretty colourful characters. Note that the Brooklands website also quotes prices with and without a donation. However, the prices below are the basic prices. Beyond that, there's a paucity of information on the website. We checked and, at the time of writing, couldn't find if access to the show also allows access to the museum itself. It's also not clear what other attractions will be on site (autojumble, club stands, etc). So either take a chance that you'll get what you want, or call the organisers on: 01932 857381. Last time we visited we found some pretty interesting aviation exhibits scattered around. Some are on more or less permanent display. But some are temporary, and others are hidden away. There's an interesting history to Brooklands. You might want to read up on that a little before you visit.

Open: 10am - 5pm

Admission: £14.50 adult, children (5 - 16years) £8. Free to under 5s

Big Bike Sunday 2019

Skipton Auction Mart, Skipton, North Yorks, BD23 1UD
The organiser says: "Following a hugely successful event last year, which raised over £4,500 for charity, the Girder Fork and Classic Motorcycle Club is holding another show this year. The event is where classic and modern motorcycles are shown by their owners hoping to be awarded prizes for the best in class or best in show. There were over 100 motorcycles on show last year, covering 100 years of manufacture. The show is open to all owners of 2 and 3 wheeled vehicles, from 50cc mopeds to trikes powered by car engines. The wider the variety, the better the show. The money raised this year will go to our chosen charities including Manorlands and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. There will be refreshments and stalls available, and the event can be under cover if the weather is inclement."
Opens: 11am. Presentation of prizes will be held at approximately 2.30pm. Exhibitors’ motorcycles should be in place by 10.30am.

Steam Spectacular

Markfield Beam Engine & Museum, Markfield Road, South Tottenham, London, London, N15 4RB

It's not all about motorcycles. It's also about a lot of other things, including ... well, steam. Here's what the management has to say:

The Markfield Beam Engine and Museum features a Grade 2 listed engine hall housing a restored, working steam-powered beam engine dating from 1888 - a masterpiece of Victorian engineering and an example of industrial heritage of social and engineering importance.

The building is set in Markfield Park, in the grounds of the former Tottenham Sewage Works which provided a vital public health facility serving this north London area from the 1850s to 1964.

At Sump, we've visited one or two of these museums, and they're always an interesting and pleasurable diversion and education. If you're in the neighbourhood, be a good neighbour and call in.

August 2019

2nd to 4th August 2019, Friday to Sunday

The 45th Annual Gloucestershire
Vintage & Country Extravaganza

South Cerney Airfield, Cirencester GL7 6HU.
This event is organised by the Stroud Vintage Transport & Engine Club (SVTEC). We're told that this is one of the biggest steam fairs in the country—and from the list of promised attractions, we can believe that boast. Here's what the organisers are talking about:

1000 classic cars from pre- and post WW2

70 Classic American cars

30 visiting car clubs

335 motorcycles and scooters

80 bicycles from 1903 - 1980

30 miniature steam engines

90 stationary engines

70 full size steam engines

200 tractors

70 buses and coaches

130 military vehicles

315 emergency and commercial vehicles

70 industrial trucks

50 vintage caravans

... and a large model aircraft flying display.

Want more? Okay, here it comes:

The Tigers Children’s Motorcycle Display Team

A Parachute Display Team

Falconry displays

A dog show

And an hilarious ‘Sheep Show’

We're not too crazy about using animals for human amusement, but we're not going to get any more political about it right now. Meanwhile, there will also be a very large classic bike show with all (or at least most) of the usual marques represented. Then they're throwing in a promised 180 trade stalls, model tents, craft marquees and a vintage fun fair. Additionally, there will be a vintage bus cruising around to take you to Cirencester Town Centre and Kemble railway station. And yes, there will be food and drink and other conveniences. Sounds to us like these guys and gals have got it pretty much all worked out—and this, we understand, is a non-profit making show.

Open: 10am to 5pm

Admission: Saturday: adult £7, junior £4.  Sunday: adult: £10, junior £5. A weekend ticket (Friday - Sunday) is adult: £15, junior: £8. Family weekender ticket (2 x adults and 2 x junior) for all three days is £35. Children under 5 years old go free.

24th & 26th August, 2019, Saturday, Sunday & Monday

International Rally Sweden, Skane Rundt 2019

This is a 500 kilometre run for bikes built before 1946. It was founded in 1912, and was originally aimed at what were then modern bikes. WW2 interrupted the rally. Consequently, it was stopped until 1970 when a group of enthusiasts re-instituted it. It's been run annually since then making 2019 the 50th event in modern times—with the focus on classic bikes. There are lots of details here to explore; far too much to cover in this listing. Suffice to say that you'll need to book as early as possible to secure a place, so check with the website and email the organisers.

21st - 22nd September 2019, Saturday and Sunday

Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show

Imperial War Museum, Duxford Cambridgeshire CB22 4QR.

Do we really need to explain this one? Probably not. But we will anyway. This is a must for anyone with an interest in WW2 aircraft. Duxford is a working airfield and museum which means they display aircraft, fly 'em, fix 'em, and occasionally crash 'em.  The hangars and aprons will be stuffed with Spitfires, Hurricanes, P51 Mustangs, the odd B52 and B17, Harvards, WW1 bi-planes, modern fighter jets, Messerschmitts, etc, etc. The museum is constantly evolving and is always throwing up surprises. Good day for the family, or just take the bike—particularly if you've got an ex-military mount. You can find Duxford on the M11 motorway maybe 40 - 50 miles north of London and 10 - 20 miles south of Cambridge. Food and drink on site, plus the museum shop.

Admission: Sorry, you'll have to check the website for details. When we tried, the system wasn't working, and it's (unnecessarily) complicated. We can tell you that weekend tickets are around £35. You'll have to check for day ticket prices. Also, car parking at Duxford is now fully booked, but there's some kind of park'n'ride shuttle operating from nearby Trumpington. If you're travelling by motorcycle, however, you might yet find a place to haul up at Duxford itself. Quite simply, you can expect a very exciting day here.

Open: 9am - 7pm. The flying starts at 1.15pm.

Vintage Vehicle Rally

London Museum of Water & Steam, Green Dragon Lane,
Brentford, Greater London TW8 0EN

This event follows on from last year's Steam and Gasoline Car Show. That was hailed by the organisers as a success, so they're reprising the gathering—albeit with a tone-down name. As the event title suggests, this is a vintage vehicle show ranging from classic cars to classic bikes to old fire engines. But it includes supercars and hot rods and "everything in between"—and if you want to add to the occasion by bringing your own appropriate wheels, you're very welcome to indulge your exhibitionist whims and needs. Talk to neil@hotmetalworks.co.uk for details. He'll want to reserve a space for you.

Admission: £4.95. A five quid donation is also welcomed/envisaged.

Open: No details

North Wales Classic Car & Motorcycle Show

(including North Wales Vauxhall - Opel Day)

Bodrhyddan Hall, Dyserth Rd, Rhuddlan, Rhyl, LL18 5SB.

There was an event at this venue in July this year. But severe weather spoiled the fun and games, so the organiser had decided to re-run the show. Apparently, a flatter event field is promised, and there will be "no horse manure guaranteed!". Interesting. The idea is to stage a more up-market/premium event. Last time the show was run, over 700 vehicles attended. That's what we're told, anyway. You can expect trade stands, an autojumble, modern vehicle dealerships (seems like there are a lot of these dealers now breaking into the classic show scene), children's entertainment, live commentary, food, drink, etc. Autojumble pitches cost £15 per pitch. Trade pitches cost just £40 per pitch when booked in advance, or £45 on the day. Premium trading pitches are also available – call for details (07467 943971) or turn up on the day.

Admission: £8.50 for adults, £3.00 for children (7-14), under 7s are free and parking is free. Classic bikers can talk to the organiser about a season pass.

No mention of motorcycles. But you can live without 'em for one day, can't you? No? Well ride down to Ravenshead and enjoy this event.

So make your own enquiries if this sounds like an agreeable way to spend half a day. See this link for more:

David Silver Honda Collection - SOHC Day

Master Lord Industrial Estate, Unit 14, Station Rd, Leiston IP16 4JD.

This is a special gathering of SOHC Hondas. It's been organised largely to reprise last year's 50th anniversary of the seminal Honda 750-4. Consequently, SOHC Honda aficionados are invited to come along and show what they got. Actually, anyone on any bike is welcome - which, to our mind, dilutes the impact of the gathering. But that ain't out business. Meanwhile there's always the David Silver Honda Collection to ogle. Expect food, drink, a Honda "pub quiz" event and prizes for star bikes, etc. David Silver founded his business in 1986 offering new-old-stock parts to Honda owners. Today he advertises spares for over 1,000 models from the 1960s through to 1999.

Copdock Motorcycle Show

Trinity Park, Ipswich, Suffolk IP3 8UH

This will be the 28th Copdock extravaganza, and what an extravaganza it is. If you can't enjoy a great day at this event, you might want to reconsider your motorcycling credentials and try quilt making instead. We're kidding, of course. Quilt making is fine by us, and so is Copdock. Expect to find a very large autojumble, trade stands, a large bike show, motoball, grass track racing, live music, Lemmings Paramotor fly-in (weather permitting), Tigers Children's Motorcycle Display Team, Ken Fox's Wall Of Death, Vintage Speedway Cavalcade, Custom Marquee for "All things custom", and much more. Dougie Lampkin MBE is the guest star. Plenty of food and drink. Prize giving. And a very nice, end-of-season vibe. Without doubt, this is the best motorcycle show we've ever attended. But how long, we wonder, before The Empire sinks its teeth into this independent event?
Admission: Adults £8.50 advance. £10 on the gate. Usual concessions.

Shuttleworth Race Day

Shuttleworth Museum, Old Warden Aerodrome, Hill Lane,

Fancy a bit of sprint racing along a verdant English grass runway? Well Richard Shuttleworth has once again organised a high-octane (yes, it's an bloody awful cliché, but we're in a hurry) day of fuel-burning oracles both on land and in the air. So expect classic motorcycle sprinting, vintage and veteran race-cars on the move, and classic aircraft doing their best to wreck what's left of the ozone layer—and may their tribe increase. It's an easy-going, non-competitive, un-timed event open to just about everyone. So no race licences are required. But dress (up) a little sensibly if you will. Also expect motorcycle club stands, classic paddocks, live music, food, drink and more. The nights are drawing in. This event will help tide you over the coming winter.

Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0QN.

Over 100 Morgan Cars are anticipated at this event. So okay, they're not motorcycles. But we suspect that many of you Sumpsters are also interested in these classic British roadsters, and Brooklands is an interesting place to hang out for a few hours.

Open: 10am to 5pm

Admission: Standard museum admission of £14.50. Take note that the Brooklands management also posts an admission price of £16; this includes a voluntary donation. Repeat: voluntary donation. We think this is poor practice, if not sharp practice. It can lead to confusion and pressure on visitors. Just be aware of this issue, if you will.

One more thing: Henry Cole will be making the draw for the museum's raffled Summer Draw T160 Triumph Trident. London to Brighton Run

The significant news for bikers is that this year there will be 15 veteran cyclists and 15 veteran motorcyclists on the run. This idea was successfully trialled last year, so the bikes are back on the programme. It's not clear however if there's still time for interested riders to register their interest. But remember; anyone can simply and unofficially ride the highways from Hyde Park Corner, London to Madeira Drive, Brighton. Note that on 2nd November 2019, the day before the run, there will be an open air motor show on London's Regent Street. Also, if you do unofficially take part in the event, please give the entrants plenty of room to do what they need to be. The run is entirely on public roads, and there is plenty of scope for problems and accidents.

Admission: Free to watch/ride/wave/whatever

Start: The first vehicles will depart at sunrise (6.56am).

Finish: ... whenever the entrants get there

Pioneer Run eBook:

What's it all about? Well, it's a photoshoot of the world's greatest veteran motorcycle run with poetry and quotes from Ixion to John Masefield to William Shakespeare to William Wordsworth.
