Almost from launch, the 745cc Norton Commando was a motorcycling legend. It boasted exactly the right looks for the era. It had a hugely respecting badge on the tank. It had power, poise and performance. And, most interestingly of all, it had Isolastic engine mounts to keep the vibrations under control.

The biking public was at first doubtful that the new-fangled "knickerlastic" would actually work. But it did, and over the decades the system has been refined to near perfection. We like all the Norton Commandos from the 750s through to the 850s. But the Type S, or S Type if you prefer, is our favourite—although the Roadster comes pretty damn close. Come to that, so does the Interstate, etc.
