Planet Knox is the parent company which trades under the Knox brand. The business was founded in 1981 and claims to have launched the world's first commercially available back protector for motorcyclists. And we're taking Knox at its word for that. In 1988, the company developed the Pro-Tek Elite Suit; said to be the world's first motorcycle jacket with back, elbow and shoulder protection built-in. In 1993, Knox moved to Cockermouth in the Lake District and narrowly missed serious damage in the recent floods that caused so much destruction in that community. In fact, water did enter the Knox factory, but it rose no more than two inches. The business was, however, stranded for a few days. But it quickly recovered and was soon back to full operational speed. There are 28 staff at Knox. The business has won numerous awards for innovation, and it runs a pretty slick organisation from design to manufacturer to advertising to point-of-sale.
Currently, the company is campaigning its modular system of rider clothing in which you can mix and match a choice of three armoured undershirts (£99.99 - £129.99) with a choice of three mid-thermal layers (£39.99 - £79.99) and lastly a stylish Roscoe leather jacket (£349.99). The firm also manufactures and sells wax jackets. If you want an example of British manufacturing excellence, you can stick Knox right up there with the likes of Triumph Motorcycles. If you can afford the firm's product, buy it. They ain't giving it away. But buying quality is always cheaper in the long run. Meanwhile, the Knox website is klunky and could use some serious streamlining. It would be a great shame if riders were deterred from buying a great product simply because they were frustrated by an awkward sales interface. www.planet-knox.com ◄PREVIOUS STORY NEXT STORY► |
