Saint denim motorcycle jeans

We have to confess that we're yet to see a pair of armoured jeans that we'd actually want to wear. That might change, of course, because the technology is getting better every year in terms of strength, durability, general feel and bang-for-buck. And were we to find ourselves on the wrong side of a traffic accident or a road slide, we've no doubt we'd urgently wish that we'd bought a pair of denim strides from the likes of Draggin' Jeans, Oxford, Revit, Furygan, Route One or whoever.

Well, a relative newcomer to the market is Saint which hails from Down Under. This Australian firm (a neighbour to, and rival of, Draggin') reckons that its single-layered denim armoured jeans are the toughest, strongest, most durable and unbreakable. The firm also reckon its product is pretty cool to wear, both stylistically speaking and otherwise.

Here's the Saint sales pitch:

"... these denims feel great to wear - age beautifully - and are cut for living. Only Saint Denim is woven with a unique double warp beam weaving the worlds strongest fiber - Dyneema's® Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene in the warp and weft with a denim face. Result: 360º torsional strength, motorcycle tested impact, burst and abrasion resilience. In the European Motorcycle CE EN13595-1 standard tests, Saint Denim achieves 3.67 seconds* (approx 50 meters slide time)."

Saint alpaca jumperBig boasts. But we haven't tested the product or heard anything negative about anything from Saint, except the price—which is £300 for the jeans, or thereabouts, and which is way above the competition.

The firm also produces denim jackets, denim vests/cut-offs, alpaca jumpers (image right), gloves, and T-shirts.

The emphasis, naturally, is largely on safety, which is always a problem because once you delve too deeply into the perceived risks of biking, it takes much of the fun out of getting astride your motorcycle in the first place.

Saint Unbreakable logoWhat cools it all a little further is the high-tech talk about polymers, activated silicon, long molecular chains, DuPont™ Kevlar® and suchlike. That's because here at Sump we're cotton and leather guys at heart and prefer to keep things natural.

But come the next bump, or slide, we'll probably be revising our interest in chemistry and will be wishing we'd been a little less traditional.

Meanwhile, we've got conflicting information about where in the world you can actually buy this gear. Saint is constantly increasing its reach, but it's a fairly new firm, remember, so you might have to do a little homework if you're in the market for a pair of expensive, high-tech crash-and-burn, single-layered motorcycle trousers.
