Triumph Street Cup for 2017

We're still trying to find out why this new member of the 900cc Triumph Street Twin family is called a "Street Cup". There must be a reason, and it might well be that that reason is bleedin' obvious to everyone else. But in the meantime, it's a mystery to us.

Street Cup?

Regardless, this bike has just been launched at Intermot in Cologne and has received a generally good reception. It's marketed as a cafe racer/street tracker, and Triumph is keen to draw our attention to the "new distinctive urban sports features, including an authentic bullet seat and removable café racer seat cowl, racing inspired fly screen, and bar-end mirrors."

Other treats include a ride-by-wire throttle, switchable traction control, up-to-the-minute ABS, a torque-assist clutch, Ace 'bars, a new Nissin twin-piston sliding front caliper c/w a floating front disc, unique RSUs (rear suspension units), and fork protectors.

The silencers have been shortened, and there's been some criticism of the uninspiring racket they make (we're reserving judgment). Meanwhile, the riding position and handling characteristic have been altered, largely by lengthening the rear shock absorbers/dampers thereby tilting the bike forward and increasing the steering angle.

Performance-wise, Triumph reckons that there's "up to" 22 percent more horsepower in the mid-range, with an 18 percent increase in torque offering 59lbs-ft (80Nm) at 3200 rpm. The maximum horsepower is a claimed 54 @ 5,900rpm.

2017 Triumph Street Cup

The Street Cup colours will be Racing Yellow/Silver Ice with Jet Black; or Jet Black/Silver Ice with Gold. Hand-applied coach lines finish off the livery.

From where we're sat, this motorcycle looks pretty good, and we've got no doubt that Triumph will price it appropriately [It's just been confirmed as £8,600 - Ed]. So buy British, if you can (even though the Street Twin, and probably this Street Cup, are actually manufactured overseas).

But Street Cup? Hands up everyone who think this name is going to go the distance?
