Venhill cable kits for Hogs

Venhill Engineering has sent us details of its replacement clutch and throttle kits for Harley-Davidsons. These, take note, are universal "proper DIY kits" for "home mechanics", and are no doubt made to Venhill's usual high standard.

First, here's what Venhill says:

"The Dual Throttle and Idle Cable Kits come in both push-fit and threaded versions, to suit a wide range of models. Extra long – at 1350mm/53 inches – they allow for bikes fitted with high handlebars, and come with either 90-degree or 75-degree bends, in a choice of black or braided steel outers. The black cables have longitudinal conduit (not coiled) which won't pinch on bends, so they won't restrict cable movement.

"The clutch cable is also made extra long - at 2080mm/82 inches - and comes in black or braided steel finishes to match the throttle. Like all Venhill cables, they're designed to deliver improved performance and durability, along with smoother action."

We haven't seen these products, so we can't tell you anything else about the fit or feel, but we generally trust Venhill to provide decent parts at the right price. However, we do question the appeal of these DIY cables. In our own riding toolkits, we generally carry repair cables and screw-on nipples and suchlike. But these accoutrements are strictly for emergencies. For long-term/regular usage we prefer traditional soldered cables, and we figure that most bikers feel the same, not least Harley-Davidson riders.

That said, you might well have special needs or requirements that Harley-Davidson simply isn't accommodating. So perhaps these kits are exactly what you want.

Either way, the Dual H-D Throttle and Idle Cable kit (push-fit and threaded with a black outer cable) retail at £37.08. For braided steel outer cables, the price is £61.80.

The Clutch Cable Kits are asking £30.90 in black, and £52.52 for braided steel. Prices include VAT.

Alternately, Venhill also makes bespoke cables. So you can talk to this firm directly and order exactly what you need with soldered nipples. Keep that in mind.
