IT'S GOTTA BE RIGHT
We only sell signs that we
hang on our own walls. If you have a problem with anything you buy from Sump, tell us and we'll sort it out. Pronto.
No fuss. No arguments.
Coventry-Eagle was a fairly short-lived British firm with roots in the 1897 Hotchkiss, Mayo & Meek company, a Victorian bicycle manufacturer based in Foleshill Road, Coventry, West Midlands. The three partners were Edmund Mayo, John Meek and Richard Hotchkiss.
By 1902, the name Coventry-Eagle was established. The business built a popular range of bicycles and motorcycles, the latter powered by proprietary engines, primarily from JAP but also Villiers, Sturmey-Archer, Matchless, Blackburne and Abingdon.
In 1923 the company launched (and launched is the appropriate word) a 981cc 50-degree sidevalve V-twin that was good for 80mph; a very impressive turn of speed given the roads of the day. Not that Coventry-Eagle had the roads to itself. One of its chief competitors was none other than Brough-Superior, and there wasn't much between the two firms in terms of reputation, performance or pricing.
The sidevalve V-twin was priced at £140 and was marketed thus: "The Super Production of the Season. For SHEER SPEED Combined with PERFECT SAFETY and EXCEPTIONAL COMFORT THERE IS NOTHING ON THE ROAD TO BEAT IT."
In 1926 a 981cc OHV Flying-8 joined the Coventry-Eagle range priced at around £160.
This bike, with engine dimensions of 85.7mm x 85mm, was also powered by a 50-degree JAP V-twin (type KTOR) and was easily capable of 100mph.
To control the extra power, the engineers built a new tube-and-lug frame with heavier duty engine plates. To keep the oil flowing, mechanical and hand-pumped lubrication was specified. Transmission was via a Jardine three-speed gearbox. Stopping was courtesy of 8-inch diameter brakes. Royal Enfield wheels, featuring the company's much admired cush drive, kept the bike rolling smoothly.
Given the pricing, the market was fairly select. Nevertheless, over the next few years Coventry-Eagle built a modest number of OHV V-twins (details are unclear). The last such example left the factory in 1930. The final sidevalve, meanwhile, was built in 1931.
The survival rate of these OHV V-twins is unclear, but we think there's only a handful, or possibly a dozen, left in the wild. Certainly, the bikes change hands for very large sums of money.
After the production of the big V-twins ceased, Coventry-Eagle continued with lightweight motorcycles, but by the end of the decade, with WW2 looming and much of the country struggling with a depressed economy, the accountants knocked off the belts and it was all over.
Our Coventry-Eagle sign is a generous 300mm x 400mm, which is roughly the size of two A4 sheets of paper. The signs are printed direct to metal in the traditional way.
Will you like it when you receive it? We think so. If we didn't, we wouldn't be flogging 'em.
We package these signs as well as we reasonably can, and we despatch as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours of ordering, and very rarely longer than 2-3 days if stock has run out and needs to be re-supplied).
Either way, we'll keep you posted. And if for any reason we can't supply your sign, we'll tell you without unnecessary delay and will refund your money in full.
And remember this if you will:
We don't sell anything that we don't hang in our own garages.
