It's the 40th anniversary of the BMW G/S—and that's a little depressing because one or two of us around here clearly remember when the bike was new (and we weren't looking at it from a pram or pushchair). Regardless, the concept has been a huge and expanding success with BMW managing to keep the descendants of the original bike ahead of the pack in almost every respect.

For 2021, the German firm is marking the moment with ... well, nothing too dramatic, but welcome upgrades nevertheless. Features for 2021 include new paint, Integral ABS Pro as standard on both the GS and the Adventure models, a six-axis inertial measurement unit, a new knock sensor (to adjust the timing as and when poor quality fuels demand it), an optional LED adaptive headlight (to light those corners), and optional Pro Hill Start, a new ECO riding mode, and it already satisfies the requirements of Euro 5.

And naturally, there are dozens of other options for the seriously hardcore adventurer, or simply for riders who just can't get enough toys and gadgets (Enduro pack, heated seats, luggage, etc).

There's no extra power on offer, so if 136PS (134hp) at 7,750rpm isn't enough for you, you'll have to wait to see what happens in 2022.

The engine dimensions stay the same at 102.5mm x 76mm. The cubic capacity is the same at 1,254cc. Brakes, wheels, suspension and pretty much everything are unmolested.

Colours include "40 Years GS" (black and yellow—which is on offer for both the GS and Adventure), and there's a Rallye red/white/blue option.
