Galena, Kansas
It's 500 miles from St Louis to Oklahoma City. We've still got plenty of daylight left, so we drive. And drive. And drive. There's plenty of traffic on I-44. We stop for food at a Denny's Restaurant, and we buy gas at around $2.10 a gallon. We pass through the towns of Sullivan, Cuba, Rolla, then Lebanon and another Springfield. We're still in Missouri and roll along on a mix of repaired concrete and fresh tarmac. In the afternoon we pass through Joplin, Missouri and drive old "66" into Galena, Kansas. Kansas has just 13.2 miles of Route 66. There's a vibe in Galena. Feels like we've crossed into another, older world.
