Styrofoam & plastic
Styrofoam plates. And plastic knives and forks. If you hate this stuff, better bring your own cutlery and crockery. During a three week sojourn, we rested at dozens of motels and hotels, and ALL of the establishments greeted us with styrofoam and plastic. We tried to laugh it off, but couldn't. We made one or two wisecracks with hotel and motel breakfast staff, but they didn't get the British irony. At a couple of check-in desks we asked if they had styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery. "We most certainly do!" we were told. In hundreds of ways, from technology to popular culture to commercial innovation to hospitality, America is a world leader. But at breakfast, this is styrofoam purgatory. Be warned.
