Newkirk, NM
Guadalupe County, New Mexico. Just 7 people live here (according to the contemporary census). We turn off 66 and find ourselves on Frontage Road at a gas station and shop with a post office. We fill up the Mustang and go into the shop for postcards and eats and drinks and stuff. The land is now wide open. Visibility is endless. We see some railway tracks at a railway crossing. The image is iconic and compelling, so we walk the tracks a little soaking up the sun and looking at distant shacks and houses and junk cars slowly rusting. Interstate 40 is dangerously close.
