Entering St Louis, MO
It's Sunday morning and St Louis, Missouri has a lazy, indifferent feel to it. We roll over a girder bridge crossing the Mississippi River. We thought this would be a special point in the trip; a kind of upbeat confirmation that we were in the Midwest proper. But it just felt like another city. A little rough around the edges. A little tired. And a little grey suddenly. The business centre appears ahead to the left. The Gateway Arch is just out of shot, also to the left. Around 3 million people live in greater St Louis. It's a major inland port and home to many major US corporations. But it feels like anywhere else.
