Springfield, Illinois
The rain eases. Blue sky ahead. The asphalt is reasonably smooth and makes for easy driving. Once upon a time this was an Indian trail. Then the stagecoaches came, and in 1915 the route was renamed the Pontiac Trail. You need to really study the history to make it sink in. There are too many tales. Too many intrigues. Too many miles to cover. Route 66 was designated in 1926. At one time, it was named Bloody 66 due to the numerous fatal smashes. I-55 was the fourth incarnation of the route. It replaced "66" in the 1970s. It's hard to superimpose the past on the present. But we do what we can and drive on.
