Shamrock, Texas
Shamrock, Texas. It's on Route 66, and it knows it. This old art deco Conoco gas station is a landmark magnet for 66-ers and will sell you all kinds of memorabilia. You can sign the visitor's register if you want. Around 2,000 souls live here in Wheeler County on the Texas Panhandle. We stop and steal some snaps and walk around a little trying to enjoy being here. It's a great building. But it's a little synthetic. Self conscious. Contrived. We consider spending the night at a neighbouring motel, and we check out a room. But it's a little seedy. Faded. Possibly buggy. That's a problem with many older motels. especially owner occupied and managed. The rooms probably won't kill you. But owners need to up their game.
