It's a typical mix of gas stations, motels, restaurants, bars, shopping malls and houses. Serious crime, we later learn, is a major problem here. But we're British and ignorant of the real or imagined dangers. So we check into a hotel run by some ex-army guys who have various items of military memorabilia on display. We chat for a while at the desk. It's a new place. Recently opened. $80 for a double room. Very clean. Comfortable. Wi-Fi. Etc. We stow our gear and find a Denny's restaurant and plot our next move. We don't feel like tourists. We're travellers, constantly moving.
